Dressing with joy: The emotional connection between clothing and how we feel

Fashion is often viewed through the lens of appearance ~ what is flattering, what is trending, or what is in style. We believe clothing is so much more than that.

The colours we choose, the prints we gravitate towards, and the silhouettes we feel drawn to often reveal something about who we are, how we want to feel, and the season of life we are stepping into ~ a wardrobe does not only reflect your past, it also inspires your future.

At Clementine Collective, we believe getting dressed is one of the simplest ways to connect with ourselves. Clothing can shift our energy, spark confidence and awaken memories. Sometimes the smallest change, such as a new colour, an unexpected print, or a silhouette we haven't tried before, can make us feel a little more like ourselves.

That is the true joy of personal style ~ it is the ultimate way we can feel a little more like ourselves.

What is dopamine dressing?

Dopamine dressing has become a popular phrase in fashion, but the feeling behind it is something much older than the trend itself.

At its heart, dopamine dressing is about choosing clothing based on how it makes you feel, rather than simply how it looks. It is the idea that colour, texture, pattern and personal style can influence our mood, energy and confidence.

It might be a bright scarf thrown over an otherwise simple outfit, a pair of earrings that make you feel a little more playful, or the dress you save for no particular reason other than the fact that you love the way you feel when you wear it.

The only rule for dopamine dressing is “does this outfit spark happiness?, and that is the most beautiful part!

Dressing for joy gives us permission to choose pieces because they make us feel something. To wear the colour we are drawn to, to reach for the print that makes us smile ~ to let our wardrobes become playful again.

Dopamine dressing reminds us that we don't need a reason to wear something beautiful, just liking it is reason enough.

The psychology of colour: Why certain shades speak to us

Colour has a remarkable ability to evoke emotion. Before we even have time to think about why we are drawn to a particular shade, our minds can associate it with a place, a person, a memory or a feeling.

Think of sun-washed yellow, it feels like warmth. Golden afternoons, summer holidays, sunshine on your skin, the optimism of a new day.

Then there is ocean blue. Familiar, expansive and grounding, a colour that can transport us straight back to the sea, reminding us to breathe a little deeper and move a little slower.

Earthy neutrals can offer something different ~ sandy beige, warm brown, olive and natural tones connect us to nature, simplicity and the beauty of things left wonderfully unrefined.

And then there are the colours that ask us to be seen. Bold reds, vibrant pinks, rich greens and electric blues. They’re colours that feel energetic, expressive and alive.

There is no universal formula for how colours affect our mood. What makes one person feel energised may make another feel completely at home. Our relationship with colour is deeply personal, shaped by memory, culture, personality and experience.

Prints, patterns and the pieces that tell a story

If colour can change the way we feel, prints and patterns can transport us somewhere entirely new.

A floral print that reminds you of your grandmother's garden, stripes that take you back to childhood summers by the coast, and hand-drawn patterns reminding you of a market you discovered somewhere far from home.

As you know, our team is naturally drawn to pieces that tell stories. Perhaps that is why vintage garments, artisan textiles and hand-crafted details feel so special to us, they carry a sense of individuality that cannot be replicated by something designed simply to follow a trend.

There is something beautiful about wearing a piece that sparks memories, making it feel like it could only belong to you.

Maximalism: The beauty of 'more'

There is a misconception that intentional living must mean having less. Slow living is not necessarily minimal living, a considered life can still be wonderfully full, it means surrounding yourself with more of what brings you joy.

It might look like a jewellery collection gathered over years, each piece attached to a memory. A wardrobe filled with colour and texture, books stacked beside the bed, shells collected from holidays ~ a home filled with objects that tell stories.

A maximalist wardrobe doesn't have to mean endless consumption, it represents expression. Layering jewellery, mixing textures, pairing prints, or wearing an unexpected colour combination. Bringing together pieces that don't necessarily follow a traditional set of styling rules, but somehow feel completely right to you.

Collecting slowly and intentionally, choosing pieces because they speak to you rather than because someone else decided they belong together ~ there is freedom in that, that is maximalism.

Letting yourself dress for the woman you are becoming

Our wardrobes are always evolving because we are always evolving. There are colours we haven't discovered on ourselves yet, silhouettes we haven't tried ~ versions of ourselves we haven't met.

Sometimes dressing with joy means reaching for something familiar. The linen dress that always makes you feel at home, your favourite denim you've worn a hundred times, the blouse that has become part of your signature, and sometimes it means stepping outside of what you know.

Trying the colour you've always said you couldn't wear, choosing the silhouette you usually pass by, wearing the print that feels just a little more expressive than your usual style. Sometimes the piece we are most hesitant to try becomes the one that reminds us who we are, there is beauty in stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Personal style isn't about finding one version of yourself and staying there, it is about giving yourself permission to change ~ to experiment, to evolve and to let your wardrobe move alongside you.

Perhaps children already have the perfect relationship with fashion?

Children have a beautiful relationship with clothing that many of us seem to lose somewhere along the way.

They don't ask whether something is flattering, they ask whether it twirls. They choose the brightest colour because they like it, the pattern because it makes them smile, and the outfit because it feels just like them! There is something wonderfully instinctive about that.

Children can remind us of something we already knew ~ clothing is meant to be enjoyed.

As we continue to grow, our hearts are increasingly drawn towards childrenswear for this very reason. We love the idea of clothing being part of childhood's most joyful moments: birthday parties, barefoot beach days, family celebrations, summer holidays and ordinary afternoons that become extraordinary simply because they were lived.

Just as we believe in collecting pieces that become part of our own stories, we love the thought of children's clothing becoming part of a family's story too. The little dress remembered from a first birthday, the souvenir t-shirt bought on a family holiday, or the cardigan passed from one sibling to another. Pieces that have been loved, worn, photographed, remembered and eventually tucked away, ready for the next little person to create their own memories in.

At Clementine Collective, we believe in choosing clothing that makes you feel something. Pieces with colour, character, craftsmanship and soul, pieces that become part of your everyday rituals and special occasions alike.

Because life is too short to save the good dress! Wear the colour, choose the print, layer the jewellery, try something new, and most importantly, wear what makes you feel alive!
